Join us for Multicultural Week 2022!

The Tórshavn Municipality and Útlendingastovan are organising a national Multicultural Week, with the Faroese title Fjølmentanarvikan. The week will commence on the 14th of October and end on the 21st of October.

There are people from 111 countries living in the Faroe Islands. The Multicultural Week aims to celebrate all these different cultures, through educational and celebratory activities and events. This can be done in a variety of ways, for example with food festivals, music events, arts, sports, education, storytelling and other experiences. The Multicultural Week focuses on celebration and togetherness.

We aim to make Multicultural Week an annual event, and we hope, that all the Faroese Municipalities will participate.

On this site, you can read how you can participate. Also, you can follow the event calendar, which will be updated regularly.

How do I participate?

The Multicultural Week is for everyone. You can participate by making your activities or events together with friends, family, school, workplace, afterschool activities and so on. Also, your school, workplace or coach can plan activities for Multicultural Week. Even your Municipality is invited to join and might organize or host an event.

We also have some scheduled events and activities planned, such as an Opening Event, an End Celebration, a Cultural expo during the week and concerts. All initiatives are welcome, and if you plan an event, that is open for all, please send us the information, and we will put it on our overall calendar. The only requirement is, that it is somehow based on the theme of multiculturalism.

REGISTER YOUR EVENTS FOR MULTICULTURAL WEEK

Even if your event is not public or open to all, we are still interested in hearing from you. You can drop us an e-mail at fjolmentan@gmail.fo or send photos of the event to Insta with #fjolmentan. Likewise, you can see the calendar on this site, and it will be updated with more activities throughout the coming weeks. We encourage everyone to check the calendar regularly.

What is the Idea Kit?

We have produced an idea kit called Hugskotskjáttan. The purpose of the idea kit is that it can be used as a toolkit and as inspiration for activities and events during the week.

Hugskotsjáttan contains different types of activities for different age groups and different sectors of society. There are two main sections. The first one is: Institutions, Workplaces and Associations and the second are: Children and Youth.

The municipalities will send the idea kit to institutions, schools, workplaces and associations in their respective districts and everyone is free to use it as inspiration for activities and events during Multicultural Week. Participants are also welcome to use their ideas.

We encourage everyone to write to us about planned events and activities. Events and activities that are open for all, will be included in our overall calendar. Good Advice

Working for inclusiveness and togetherness about cultural diversity is a continuous undertaking, which demands openness. It is also a multilayered approach, to which all sectors in society can contribute, as well as individuals. For everyone, who is involved in this undertaking, it is important to remember, that even if we all have a cultural identity, we also have other identities, such as being a mother, father, sister, brother, being artistic, sports-minded, a film fan, a music enthusiast and so on. We must be careful not to stigmatize or use stigmatizing language.

Thank you and have a good Multicultural Week.
