Multicultural Week 2024

When Multicultural Week kicks off in October, join us for Family Day, multicultural dance, dance workshops, art exhibition, knitting workshop, story night, concerts, and much more.

Multicultural Week is an integration initiative that started in the Municipality of Tórshavn. In 2022, the campaign was renamed Multicultural Week, or Fjølmentanarvikan in Faroese, and it has developed into its current form and is now celebrated in other municipalities as well. Multicultural Week aims to recognise and celebrate the diverse cultures in the Faroe Islands. It provides a framework for shared experiences that create lasting memories and, hopefully, strengthen the sense of community. The week emphasises a positive and welcoming spirit, ensuring everyone feels safe and included. Importantly, Multicultural Week does not align with any specific political orientation.

What is on the program?

There is a lot on the program for this year, Multicultural Week, and more to come.

New this year is that we have workshops, such as Dance Workshops in the Nordic House, where you can step in and try Bacchata, Afrobeat and dance to Peruvian rhythms, as well as Faroese chain dance. We also have an art exhibition in Perlan, a stand-up workshop, a knitting workshop, and a story night. We will end this year's Multicultural Week with a big event in the halls of Poul Michelsen, where we, in collaboration with the Support Team, organise a street-inspired event: Street Culture, with food, children's events, dance and concerts, plus much more. Everyone is welcome to all public events.

Everyone can arrange an event at Multicultural Week.

Anyone can organize an event during Multicultural Week. This initiative encourages everyone—institutions, schools, workplaces, associations, neighbourhoods, and individuals—to participate. The municipality hosts several public events each year, but you are also welcome to plan your own initiative or event in your community. For inspiration, you can find ideas for events in the idea kit (Faroese only). Ideas for initiatives and events are in the idea budget, which can be found here:

How can I participate?

You can also participate more actively, either by performing, volunteering, arranging a workshop, making coffee, or doing something else. We want to provide a framework for as many events as possible. You can contact us at fjolmentan@gmail.com or visit the International House.

Multicultural Week across the Country

Multicultural Week is part of the municipal integration network, and one of the main objectives is for all municipalities to participate to the greatest possible extent in 2025. Many are already involved, and we are so happy that 2Sunda municipality is hosting the opening of the Multicultural Week this year—and we are pleased to announce that Vestmanna municipality will host the opening in 2025.

Keep in mind
Keep in mind

Keep in mind

  • Even if two people are from the same minority group, they may have nothing in common.
  • Emphasize the characteristics you have in common, and remember that everyone is an individual, regardless of background.
  • People have multiple identities depending on circumstances. In addition to being "foreigners", you can be a dancer, a grandfather, a musician, a bookworm, a handball player or someone who loves board games. That's why it's important not just to emphasise one aspect of the identity.
  • Be careful about using pronouns, as pronouns can feel stigmatising.
  • There can be a big difference between being an immigrant and being a refugee. It is not sure that refugees want to talk about war.
